We hope you are all well! We’d like to encourage you to listen to Emily Hanford’s podcast Sold a Story-it’s an amazing, in-depth report on so many of the issues we’re facing in reading instruction.

We’ll be hosting an online community discussion about the podcast this coming Sunday November 20th at 7:00 pm. Details below, along with more information about several upcoming literacy-related events in the community:

Tuesday, November 15, 7:00-8:30 pm Brookline SEPAC (Special Education Advisory Council) monthly meeting will include a discussion with Lesley Ryan Miller and Michelle Herman (starting at 7:45 pm) about literacy interventions in Brookline, initial results from the new mClass/DIBELS early literacy assessment administered to all students in kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 2. Just click on the above link to find the Zoom meeting link. No need to register in advance.

Sunday, November 20th, 7:00-8:30 pm Join the Brookline Literacy Coalition for a community discussion about the American Public Media podcast Sold a Story. Five episodes are available now and the sixth and final episode will be released this Thursday

We will share some guiding questions to prompt discussion of the information in each episode and we hope to foster honest sharing of reflections, questions, and thoughts. We strongly encourage you to listen to this podcast. However, you are welcome to join even if you haven’t had time to listen to all of the episodes yet.  Register here to join the discussion on Sunday. This discussion will not be recorded.

Monday, November 21, 6:00 pm School Committee Meeting. Curriculum issues are expected to be on the agenda. The agenda will be posted at least 48 hours before the meeting. The meeting will be streamed live and available as a recording via Brookline Interactive Group.

Sunday in early December (exact date TBD) The Brookline Literacy Coalition will host a conversation with Nancy J. Nelson Fien, Ph.D., a Deputy Director of the National Center on Improving Literacy, Instruction & Intervention Strand Lead, Director of the Lead for Literacy Center, and Assistant Professor of Special Education at BU/Wheelock College of Education. Confirmed date and registration information to follow soon.
