Nancy Nelson
Nancy J. Nelson, Ph.D., NCSP, is an Assistant Professor of Special Education at Boston University, Deputy Director of the National Center on Improving Literacy and Interim Associate Director of the BU TEACH Research Center. Prior to joining BU’s faculty, Dr. Nelson was a research professor at the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon.
Dr. Nelson is a former special education teacher and school psychologist, and a principal investigator on more than a dozen federally funded projects to develop or test the efficacy of reading and math interventions for students with or at risk for learning disabilities. Dr. Nelson regularly works with state, regional, and local education agencies to provide technical assistance related to the effective implementation of assessment and instruction in multi-tiered systems of support.
Dr. Gary Schiffman
Gary Shiffman is a Brookline resident and the parent of two Brookline High School graduates. He has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan and is a former Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Diego. He served as Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator at Brookline High School for 17 years. He is also the co-creator of “The 4 Question Method”, an approach to planning and teaching history courses. Gary and his co-author, Jon Bassett, have outlined this method in the book From Story to Judgement: The 4 Question Method for Teaching and Learning Social Studies. They have worked with teachers and schools at multiple grade levels on writing and revising curriculum, and on developing effective and engaging ways of teaching history.
We organized a Panel Discussion after a screening of The Right to Read film and the Coolidge Corner Theater. The panel was moderated by Brookline parent and School Committee member, Steven Ehrenberg. Members of the panel were:

Kareem Weaver
Kareem Weaver is a California-based parent, educator and literacy activist who is knowledgeable, insightful, and passionate about ensuring all kids learn to read well in our schools. He is Co-Founder and Executive Director of FULCRUM, which partners with stakeholders to improve reading results for students. He is the Oakland NAACP’s 2nd Vice President and Chair of its Education Committee. His advocacy is featured in the film The Right to Read.
Dr. Tiffany Hogan
Tiffany Hogan is the director of the Speech, Language, and Literacy Lab (SAIL) and a professor in the Department of Communication Science and Disorders at MGH Institute of Health Professions. She studies the links between oral and written language development and is committed to translating research into practice in ways that are informed by the insights and findings from implementation science. Dr. Hogan has a talent for clearly explaining the science in ways that can help parents and educators understand it better and use it in practical ways.
